Course Description

This course is an overview of the fundamentals of accounting for financial managers. Students will apply basic principles, concepts, and ethics of accounting to the preparation, interpretation, and analysis of financial statements.

Topics and Objectives

Accounting Fundamentals

  • Identify the roles of various accounting governing bodies.
  • Explain the impact of the Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) Act and ethics on accounting practices.
  • Use the accounting equation.
  • Describe the accounting cycle.

Accounting Principles

  • Apply generally accepted accounting principles to accounting transactions.
  • Compare and contrast cash and accrual methods.

Financial Statements

  • Examine the components of financial statements.
  • Describe the interrelationships between the four financial statements.
  • Prepare a balance sheet, income statement, and statement of retained earnings given a data set.

Cash Flow Statements

  • Prepare a statement of cash flows given a data set.
  • Explain the importance of cash flow management.

Financial Statement Analysis

  • Analyze financial statements.
  • Recommend strategies to improve organizational performance based on financial analyses.
