Cooperative Education Programs in Vocational Technical Education
This course examines the components comprising quality cooperative education programs for high school students, including work-based learning, youth employment laws, employability skills, equity issues, workplace standards, and other work-related experiences related to career and technical education cooperative programs.
*A Masters Degree or higher is required for this course*
Topics and Objectives
History, Philosophy and Theory of Career and Technical Education
- Examine the history, philosophy, and theory of career and technical (vocational) education.
Types of Career and Technical Education Programs
- Describe various career and technical education cooperative courses.
- Develop a list of course contents that can be used for a comprehensive cooperative education course.
- Compare and contrast a variety of career and technical education programs and their placement components as they relate to cooperative education programs.
Youth Employment Laws
- Analyze the state employment laws as they relate to state-approved cooperative education programs and placement within those programs.
- Examine allowable jobs for youth in a cooperative education program, based on applicable laws.
State Department of Education Requirements and Reporting
- Integrate state department of education requirements into the creation of an approved cooperative education program.
Equity Issues and Opportunities
- Compare and contrast equity issues in the classroom and workplace.
- Identify sexual harassment policy and implications for the workplace.
Skills and Standards
- Explain the employability skills required for success in a cooperative education program
- Design lesson plans that relate to necessary employability skills of a work-study student.
- Examine state- and nationally-approved workplace standards.
Performance Standards
- Construct a system to manage cooperative education performance standards.
- Produce a list of competencies necessary to meet the mandates of performance standards.
Coordinator Responsibilities
- Analyze the activities for which a coordinator is responsible in order to ensure a meaningful work-based learning experience.
- Examine potential business partnerships in a local community.
